Phyllis Root grew up in Indiana and Illinois and decided to be a writer in 5th grade but didn't follow through on the plan until her 30s, when she wrote a flurry celebrated picture books including One Duck Stuck
, What Baby Wants and Kiss the Cow
. Her books are praised for their use of sound and for their range: some quiet and moody, others raucous and loud. Currently, Root resides in Vermont, where she teaches at Vermont College's MFA in Writing for Children program.
