William Steig author, illustrator
Early in his career, William Steig's reputation grew rapidly thanks to a number of cover illustrations and cartoons he did for The New Yorker and continued primarily as a cartoonist, doing over 2,600 cartoons and 117 covers for The New Yorker, until he was 61, when he wrote his first children's book. Here, Steig shined as well, winning numerous awards for books like Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island, and Doctor DeSoto. Steig was also the author and illustrator of the picture book Shrek!, which was adapted into a wildly successful and critically acclaimed feature film franchise.
